When you live in Georgia, you know that plant based fibers like cotton and linen are smart choices here in Georgia almost year round. At The Craftivist, we carry several yarns that perform superbly in warm weather, and many are machine washable!
Here are a few highlights:
We recently restocked Sparrow with a wide selection of colorways. This 100% organic linen, fingering weight yarn feels crisp at first, and then becomes handkerchief soft with washing and wearing. The fiber is sourced in Belgium, spun and dyed in Italy, and finished in Maine, USA. It works up lovely as t-shirts, tank tops, shawls, and even bags!
We love how this organic cotton, fingering weight yarn also includes 15% baby alpaca. It is soft, eco-friendly, lightweight, and has the added bonus of a slight halo from the alpaca. We’ve seen this yarn excel in tees, tanks, sweaters, and shawls. It’s a great choice for an easy and quick Sophie Scarf, too! The company Illimani is passionate about supporting artisans in Bolivia and Peru, and we are pleased to offer their beautiful yarns to you locally.
We recently started carrying BC Garn in the shop. Come by to feel the lovely, sport-weight, machine washable Summer in Kashmire. It’s 90% organic cotton with 10% cashmere. Keep it in mind for tops, hats, or even drink coasters! Danish-born BC Garn creates a large selection of mindfully produced, cruelty free yarns, and we are delighted to support their mission.
This richly textured, marled DK yarn combines 60% merino wool from Colorado with 40% organic cotton from Texas. It will give you that “favorite sweatshirt” feel for baby sweaters, lightweight shawls, and other garments. Brooklyn Tweed proudly develops and manufactures 100% of their yarns in the USA, and we are fortunate to be the only local yarn shop in Georgia that offers a range of their yarns.
Check out the tower of Zooey balls in the shop! This DK, machine washable yarn is 60% cotton and 40% linen flax. Knitters appreciate it in the popular Ranunculus and Love Note tops. Woman-owned and USA-based Jupiter Moon Farm has been in business for about 20 years, established the first yarn CSA (community supported agriculture), and now offers yarn around the world.
For a quick summer knit, check out Kestrel. This 100% organic linen yarn uses the same fiber as fingering weight Sparrow (see above!), and spins it into a worsted weight ribbon structure. Its flat surface adds an interesting texture to knit and purl stitches, and it finishes with a beautiful drape. Consider it for cardigans, especially! We have a recently restocked collection of Kestrel with ample colorway choices. Come see the wall of possibility!
